Behind the Scenes: Cataract Evaluation

So, you think you might have cataracts, or your doctor told you it was time to have your cataracts removed. Now what? It’s time for a cataract evaluation!

A cataract evaluation is necessary even if you have already been told you have cataracts. The evaluation is so much more than just diagnosing your condition. Your eyes will be tested, measured, and examined. Perhaps more importantly, you will be asked several questions to determine what your visual goals are. Our goal is to provide you with world-class care by using the most advanced technology to provide you with a personalized experience based on what you hope to achieve. If you’ve chosen Texas Eye and Laser Center for your cataract evaluation, here is how your evaluation appointment will progress.

Check-In

When you arrive at Texas Eye and Laser Center, you will be checked in by one of our fabulous receptionists. If you haven’t already completed your patient forms (they must be renewed annually!), then you will be asked to do so at that time. You will also be given a sheet that reflects what to expect from your appointment, very similar to what we are doing with this blog! The receptionist will inform the surgeon’s team that you are ready to begin!

Pro-Tip: The cataract evaluation generally takes 3-4 hours. Texas Eye and Laser Center will have coffee and a few snacks available, but if you have special dietary needs, be sure to account for them!

Pre-Counseling

You will receive a phone call before your appointment from one of our Patient Ambassadors who will help you to navigate through your upcoming evaluation and provide you with information so that it goes smoothly. The Patient Ambassador will ask a few important questions about your health history and explain what will happen during your evaluation and what to expect during the surgery.

Testing

One of our highly-trained technicians will perform several tests called MAPS and ASCANS. These will help the doctor to understand your overall visual health as well as determining what type of intraocular lens (IOL) you may qualify for.

Work Up

One of our highly-trained technicians will perform a complete preliminary exam to prepare you to see the doctor.

Exam

You will meet with the doctor after your eyes have dilated sufficiently. After performing the examination, it is possible the doctor will request additional testing. The doctor will go over the types of intraocular lenses you qualify for, taking into account your visual health and goals.

Post-Counseling

You will meet again with your Patient Ambassador to review your options, sign consent forms, schedule your surgery and discuss financials.
